PUBLIC PENSION SCHEMES AND SOCIAL PARTNERS CONFER
The National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) recently hosted a symposium on proposed pension reforms, bringing together social partners that included public pension schemes, trade unions, employer representatives and other stakeholders.
The symposium was meant to allow stakeholders discuss how the current pension system can be made more inclusive, fair, equitable and responsive to the needs of the citizens.
This event forms part of a broader national consultative process aimed at getting views from various stakeholders to provide input into the reforms. The goal is to ensure that citizens live a dignified life after retirement.
Opening the conference, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Mr. Zechariah Luhanga, reiterated that government was aware of the challenges in the current pension system and was addressing them through the reforms.
βTo spearhead the pension reforms, the Secretary to the Cabinet constituted a committee to prepare the Cabinet Memorandum, Position Paper and Roadmap. The Committee is now at a stage of stakeholder engagement which started two weeks ago. I would like to cite the introduction of the NAPSA partial withdrawal, reduction of penalty rate and a new penalty waiver as signs of the governmentβs commitment to this process,β he said.
NAPSA Director General, Mr. Muyangwa Muyangwa, expressed appreciation to the government for its continued efforts to strengthen the pension system. He stressed that pension was a social right.
βIn a world of shifting demographics and evolving labour markets, pension reform is not just a technical necessity, it is a social right. It requires social dialogue, courageous policy choices, and a willingness to learn from both local experiences and global best practices. We are gathered here not only as professionals and stakeholders, but as custodians of the future well-being of our citizens, present and future, who rely on the adequacy, sustainability, affordability and fairness of our pension system,β said Muyangwa.
The government has embarked on robust reforms to improve the level of benefits and the pension system fair and equitable for all citizens.
