The Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants (F**A) successfully hosted an Ethics and Independence Workshop on 12 June 2026 at the FRCS Training Room. The event brought together finance professionals from a wide range of organizations, creating a collaborative space to strengthen awareness and application of ethical standards in the profession.
The workshop featured a plenary session led by Mr. Sharvek Naidu, Managing Partner at KPMG, who spoke on the importance of ethics and independence in organizational success. He outlined four critical dimensions:
โข Trust and Credibility - Ethics and independence are fundamental to maintaining trust and credibility in financial reporting.
โข Independence Dimensions Independence in fact and in appearance ensure unbiased professional judgments and stakeholder confidence.
โข Regulatory and stakeholder Impact - Increasing regulations and stakeholder expectations make ethics and independence critical for governance.
โข Leadership responsibilities - Partners must lead by example, ensuring ethics guide firm reputation, audit quality, and risk management.
Facilitators Ms. Vasicamaca Lacabuka and Ms. Ajentri Kumar highlighted the five fundamental principles of ethics and independence:
โข Integrity
โข Objectivity
โข Professional competence and due care
โข Confidentiality
โข Professional behaviour
They emphasized that these principles form the foundation of professional conduct and must guide decision-making at all levels. In addition, they discussed the conceptual framework, explaining how professionals can apply it in their everyday work to navigate ethical dilemmas and maintain independence in practice.
The workshop featured interactive group discussions, where participants actively contributed insights and shared experiences, reinforcing the importance of applying ethical principles in real-world scenarios.
A highlight was the panel discussion on โIndependence Under Pressure: Upholding Professional Integrity in a Competitive, Client-Driven and AI-Enabled Environmentโ. Panelists offered diverse perspectives, sparking lively dialogue among participants.
The workshop helped participants better understand ethics and independence and gave them practical ways to apply these values in their daily work. With insights from speakers, guidance from facilitators, group discussions, and a lively panel session, everyone left with a stronger commitment to ethics and independence in todayโs fast changing business world.
