Excited to share our latest research, "𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: 𝐄𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐢𝐥-𝐠𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐂𝐂 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧," published by Ola Alaa Farrash and Edib Smolo.

In this study, we tackle the complex link between environmental efforts and financial success in the Gulf Cooperation Council's (GCC) key hydrocarbon industry. We used a dynamic panel GMM approach to control for endogeneity and cross-sectional dependence, analyzing how the 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐞 (𝐄𝐏𝐒), 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐄𝐂), and 𝐆𝐇𝐆 𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 impact profitability (𝐑𝐎𝐀 & 𝐑𝐎𝐄).

🔍 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬:

- 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭-𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭: We found a subtle, short-term 𝐧𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 connection between environmental performance (EPS) and profitability, likely due to high initial investment or compliance costs.

- 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Energy consumption paradoxically correlates 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 with profitability, reflecting the sector's high production focus and regional energy subsidies.

This research offers crucial new empirical data for hydrocarbon-based economies navigating the green transition.

Our study dives into the complex financial impact of green investments in the key 𝐆𝐂𝐂 𝐨𝐢𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫. Using dynamic panel GMM, we find a fascinating, multi-dimensional relationship:

• A short-term 𝐧𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐤 between 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 (𝐄𝐏𝐒) and profitability, potentially due to high initial costs.
• A 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 between 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 and profitability, reflecting the region's production-oriented, subsidized context.

This work offers new empirical evidence for policymakers aiming to balance economic growth and environmental responsibility in hydrocarbon-based economies.
