You might not have noticed it happen, but a lot of small, local accountancy firms have quietly been bought up by big national groups.
The name on the door might stay the same for a while. The service usually doesn't. The accountant who knew you and your business gets replaced by a call centre, a portal, and a different junior every year. You go from a valued client to a number on a system.
We're independent, owner-run and local — and we intend to stay that way. With us you get a real person who knows your name, knows your business, and picks up the phone.
If your accountant hasn't felt the same since the takeover, switching is easier than you think — we handle the whole thing.
Fixed monthly fees. ICAEW Chartered, Swadlincote and Ashby-de-la-Zouch.

A bit of good news for business owners around Ashby, Swadlincote and the wider East Midlands.
For the first time since 2011, HMRC has raised the approved mileage rate. If you use your own car for work, you can now claim 55p a mile for the first 10,000 miles — up from 45p — completely free of tax and National Insurance. It is backdated to 6 April, so it covers the miles you have already driven this year.
On 10,000 business miles, that is an extra £1,000 a year, tax-free.
If you drive a company car the rules are a little different, and those rates changed too. We have explained the whole thing in plain English here, including what to do if you have been claiming at the old rate:

HMRC raised the approved mileage rate to 55p a mile from 6 April 2026 — the first increase in 15 years. What it means for limited company directors, and how it differs from company-car fuel rates.

Most accountancy firms look the same on a website.
The right four questions, asked before you sign, tell you everything you need to know.
01. When do you do my tax planning — before year-end, or after?
02. Is your fee fixed, or do you bill by the hour?
03. Will I speak to the same person every time I call?
04. When I email or call, how quickly do you reply?
If those questions sound like the conversation you wish you were having, we offer every business owner a free 15-minute call to find out whether we would be the right fit.

If your limited company profit is growing toward £50,000 or above, it is worth understanding how corporation tax actually works now.
Since April 2023 there are three effective rates — 19% for profits under £50k, 25% for profits over £250k, and a sliding scale in between. Pension contributions, capital allowances, and in some cases R&D relief can all reduce your taxable profit legally.
We work with limited companies and growing businesses across the East Midlands from our offices in Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Swadlincote. If your year-end is approaching, get in touch sooner rather than later.

Most limited company directors we speak to have never had a proper conversation with their accountant about how to pay themselves tax-efficiently.
The right salary and dividend structure depends on your personal situation — other income, pension contributions, whether a spouse is involved, your plans for the business. If nobody has ever asked you these questions, your structure might be working against you.
We are an independent chartered practice based in Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Swadlincote. If you would like a straightforward conversation about whether your current setup is working as hard as it should be, get in touch.
